It also works as a primer alongside compatible Kuraray cements for indirect cases. The enamel caveat matters: because a mild self-etch conditions enamel less aggressively, selectively etching any unprepared enamel margins with 35% phosphoric acid before the primer improves the enamel bond. Where it is not the first pick is a workflow that needs a single-bottle universal for speed across many etching modes, or a case with large unprepared-enamel margins where an etch-and-rinse approach may serve better.
Applying Clearfil SE Bond step by step
- Isolate the field and complete the preparation.
- Optionally selective-etch unprepared enamel with 35% phosphoric acid, then rinse and dry.
- Apply SE Primer to the whole preparation and leave it undisturbed for 20 seconds.
- Use gentle air to evaporate the solvent fully.
- Apply Bond, thin it with air, and light-cure for 10 seconds.
- Place and cure the composite as usual.

Advantages and limitations in daily use
The advantages are low post-operative sensitivity on dentin, a durable MDP-based dentin bond, a simple two-bottle workflow, and one of the deepest evidence bases of any adhesive. The limitations are a weaker self-etch enamel bond without a selective etch step, two components and an extra application step against a one-bottle universal, and a primer that keeps best under refrigeration. That storage need is minor in a restorative practice that goes through adhesive steadily, where refill bottles turn over fast enough to stay fresh.
Where Clearfil SE Bond sits among self-etch and universal systems
Against a one-bottle universal used in self-etch mode, the trade is an extra step for a more durable, better-sealed dentin interface. Against an etch-and-rinse system, Clearfil SE Bond gives up some raw enamel bond strength on unprepared enamel, recoverable with a selective etch, in exchange for lower technique sensitivity and less post-operative sensitivity. Kuraray also offers Clearfil SE Bond 2 as an updated version with a streamlined protocol, so a practice standardising on the chemistry has a current option to stock.
Clearfil SE Bond suits restorative practices that want a durable, low-sensitivity dentin bond and accept an extra step to get it. A practice that values speed and multi-mode flexibility across many cases may prefer a universal adhesive. For dentin-bonded restorations where longevity and low sensitivity matter most, it stays the benchmark two-step self-etch system.
